The Seed Germination Experiment was a class experiment. To conduct this, students had to put a dampen paper towel in a ziplic bags, and then gently slide 6 corn beans and 6 mung beans into the bag. This was done with 4 bags, 2 bags with 3 mung beans and 3 corn beans in each. Students then placed one bag per type of seed into a light place, and into a dark place. We then watched our seeds grow in the different locations and recorded the data.
The goal of this experiment was to teach students more about Self-Directional Skills. This experiment relates to Self-Directional Skills because students had to plant, record, and take care of the seeds by themselves on a daily basis within the span of two weeks. Students also had two sheets to fill out about the experiment and turn it in by a certain deadline.
This sample represents my current growth in Self-Directional skills because I now understand the large responsibilities in high school. This includes completing assignments on time, and not trying to do them all last minute.
I choose to represent this in my portfolio because this was one of the biggest Self-Directional project that I have done this year, and the one that took the longest, as well. This experiment is the perfect example of showing independence and responsibility because you are working on the seeds every day for two weeks, and doing class discussions about it often.
One thing I would change is how long I soaked my seeds. To start your seed germination experiment, you must independence the seeds by soaking them in water overnight. I soaked them in water for two nights, and most of my corn seeds drowned. This is another example of taking responsibility.
