My Spring Exhibition 2021 is about Project Drawdown: Kihei Charter Edition. Project drawdown is a project that freshman at Kihei Charter need to complete. Students are put into groups to create a website about a solution to climate change that can be implemented on Maui. They must include a website with a home page, details page, photos of their Spanish activism posters, their letters to earth, and an expert interview page.
I worked with Secrett Miller and Elsa Case on investigating ways that Kihei Charter can become a net-zero campus. A net-zero campus is a school that produces little to no carbon emissions, produces as much energy as it consumes, and uses clean and renewable energy sources. We believe that that net-zero is a great solution for the school because it is admirable for the environment and also saves money!
I believe this represents Global Awareness because the earth is unfortunately experiencing a huge climatic change being caused by humans. In this whole quarter, we learned so much about climate change and about the science of it, like the nitrogen cycle and the carbon cycle. Learning about human-caused climate change made us more aware about how we could help save our planet and teach others how to do the same! We learned about this through all classes- and assignments like our letter to the Earth in Humanities made me more passionate about our planet, and taught me that in despite of my age I can take action and help the planet! I believe this project included many more 21st century skills like informational skills because we gathered information and applied it to a topic, as well as business literacy because all of the numbers about the school's solar panels we included!
One thing I thought was hard was the amount of time we were given to complete this project. We were given about a week and had work periods to connect with our groups and work on our site. But, we had up to 3 interviews that took a while to respond, and one of them didn't end up responding! But, I am proud that we all pulled through in the end! I am very proud of the effort that came into this project, as well as the outcome! I am also proud that we found a way to include everyone in the project with everything going on, which is usually a major struggle for me!
